This is the face of ALS… that man sitting there with the worlds biggest smile died from ALS… surrounded in this picture by his children and grand children, my father-in-law.
I had no great love for this man while he was alive… no love for him at all before he got sick… and not an ounce of compassion from me while he was sick. But I respected the hell out of him. He was the bravest person I knew and many of you don’t even deserve to sit in the same room as this guy when he was alive.
Many of you think ALS is just a disease where people lose their ability to walk.. You are fucking morons… this disease removes all muscle control.. you can’t walk, you can’t eat, you can’t breath. You are barely left with the ability to move your eyes and blink. Let me give you the low down on how this disease progresses.. and some of you might start checking yourself to see if you aren’t already in early stages:
random muscle twitches
difficulties swallowing
pains that just come and go as they please
random tingling in any part of your body
loss of strength
labored breathing
complete loss of bladder or bowel control
paralysis of legs
total inability to breath
You get the idea. This isn’t just you sitting in a wheel chair going about your life as usual. This is you maintaining 100% of your faculties while your body destroys itself and slowly suffocates you while you can simply do nothing but watch yourself die and see the devastation your existence has on your entire family.
This man, pictured below, knowing everything going against him told me himself he would live to see his first born grand child reach the age of 10… and to do that, he did everything needed to survive.. had every surgery, lived full time on a ventilator and feeding tube, even had his salivary glands radiated so he wouldn’t choke on his own saliva all day long. Imagine you have this life… most people are gone inside of 2 years.
Well, fast forward 10 years. My plane lands after a 3 hour flight from Boston to Orlando. My phone rings… it’s my wife…she’s crying hysterically. “He’s decided he’s going to die tomorrow”… “He’s going to have his machines turned “.
Be Me… coming off my plane, it’s 9pm on a Thursday night, I’m in Orlando, my wife and kids are in Philadelphia for her father’s birthday… that’s right.. HIS BIRTHDAY…
I walk past security and go directly to the ticket counter and buy a ticket on the 8:30pm to Philadelphia which was delayed 1 hour, as if it was waiting for me.
Get to Philly at 1am, go to a hotel near the hospital.. I go in the next morning to find devastated wife and sister… Her father, blinking “yes” to all the instructions being read by his doctor… basically agreeing that he is going to die, and that his brain will be donated to ALS research.
Before he goes all I can say to him is “It was good to know you.. I’ll take care of your daughter.. thanks for everything”.. I grab his hand and shake it.. and walk out of the room. He’s loaded up with morphene and the machines are turned off.. I sit outside the room watching his heart rate monitor… literally watch him pass from life to death as the machine flat lined and he was forever gone after living 10 years from his promise to see his grand kids grow up, until he could take no more.
Now I see people are pissed off because somebody finally got the idea to shed some light on this disease… and some people started pouring ice buckets over their heads… and now Africa suddenly has starving dehydrated children, and these people are all idiots, and wasting natural resources…
I have never heard such bullshit fucking garbage in my entire life.. I know many of you at first didn’t realize what this ice bucket challenge was all about, and you thought… wow, some stupid cheapskate couldn’t just donate 20 bucks so they wasted a bucket of water, and when you did your research, you found out that this thing actually raised 30 Million bucks… in like a two week period or something miraculous. So, you backed away from your position with the actual facts in hand..
And then there are those of you who simply don’t fucking get it..
I’m not giving you the ice bucket challenge.. how about go spend 15 minutes with a fully progressed stage 10 ALS patient before you go spouting off your shit about somebody wasting a .99 cents bag of ice and self recognize you’re just a piece of shit who hasn’t contributed dick to society. I have no room for shit stains like you in my life. You want to solve Africa’s problems? GO SOLVE AFRICA’S PROBLEMS. Figure something out, other than create a poorly designed ill conceived meme that detracts from some great work for a cause that gives people with 0 hope ANY HOPE.
