Great White Shark nursery discovered off the coast of Western Australia

This is super exciting! We know so little about baby white sharks, and how the species births and raises is young. Actually it’s virtually unknown.

And baby sharklings are so adorable.

Also sharks are such a vital part of the ocean ecosystem, we really need to work on protecting them, and studying how they reproduce and protecting that is a massive breakthrough.

The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a powerful apex predator lamniform shark found in all major oceans.  Mature individuals grow up to 21ft (6.4m) and can weight over 7,000 lbs. Though previously believed to have a life span of 30 years, we now know that great whites live far longer for an estimated 70 years making them one of the longest lived cartilaginous fish currently known.  Not surprising, great whites are ranked first in having the most attacks on humans (with 272 documented unprovoked attacks), however humans are not their preferred prey and it’s believed that most of these attacks are due to mistaken identities.

“There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.” – Carl Sagan

Seldom is there a photograph so breathtakingly beautiful that it can alter your perspective about your place in the Cosmos. Last year, the Cassini probe orbiting Saturn took such a photo showing the Earth as seen from the outer Solar System.

Encapsulated within this photograph is a reminder of how incredibly small we are and also how far we’ve come as a species. Photographs, such as this, give us pause and remind us of the common bonds we all share and of the insignificance of that which divides us. Take a moment to appreciate this Pale Blue Dot we all share.
